Hi, Beautiful cats especially the greys markings (Scratchy) but to get the very best from your shots i would sagest you try to concentrate on each cats best assets, the grey has lovely markings so NO flash just natural light and try to put his/her favourite blanket or bed in a spot that will have good light at some point in the day + be set up in good time prior to her relaxing , remember a cat loves to bask in the sun so a sunny place by a window is good with the camera side on and slightly forward of the subject.
the black and white (Stu) has beautifully long whiskers that will contrast well against his black fur so i would sagest similar set up but perhaps closer to subject to get a good crop !!
Garden shots are also very good for action shots, depending on your lens use a large aperture with ISO 400 or 800 and a fast shutter speed. I hope i may have been of some assistance but its hard to be more specific as i don’t have your set up particulars

Yours M Muir

Thanks much for your comments. They are helpful. At the current time my setup consists of the camera, the kit lens, and the 50mm 1.8. I'm having a really hard time adjusting to the narrow depth of field of the 50mm. I've taken a number of pictures where the subject is only partially in focus, and that is taking a lot of getting used to. I think what I really need to work on is being able to take longer shots so so that I can stop the lens down slightly and still get the light that I need. Thanks again for your comments!

Mainly included because of the blur on the background chair
