Hidden Valley Skiing, Spring 2005

Hidden Valley Ski Area is a small ski area just outside of Saint Louis Missouri, very close to Six Flags. While it isn't a large ski resort by any means, it does provide a person a chance to "hit the slopes" without incurring the downtime and cost of traveling to Colorado. Skiing in the Midwest is totally different than skiing in Colorado. In Colorado, everything is white. In the midwest, everything is brown, except for where they have made artificial snow. A fun time can be had, though, as long as you have reasonable expectations going into it. I have a writeup that I did about a trip to Hidden Valley that should provide more information.

This shot was from the edge of the parking lot. The operating chair lift for this side of the hill was behind the conifer in the middle of the shot. You can also see one of the golf course greens in the foreground. The area apparently serves as a golf course in the summer. It seems exceedingly steep for a golf course, though.

Snowboarder in thought.
It's a strange thing being at a midwest resort. They have snow... where they put snow.
You can get a small sense of feel for the steepness by looking at the snow blowing fans at the edges of the trail. They look like light poles with a big cylinder on the top of them. Each of those is probably 20-25 feet high. Noticing how quickly the hill rises above them can give a feel for the height.
