Gas Furnace

With the cover off the furnace, you can see how it works. The controls are on the left. To light the pilot light you take off the small black metal piece on the right and stick a match in there at the correct spot. The flame bar is also in there, and when the furnace kicks on it heats the area around the upside down triangle. A fan at the back of the triangle blows the warm air out into the living space. Very simple design, but it seems to work.
